AUSTIN ANTHONY
Making Waves Awards
Each year during Paddle NL’s Annual General Meeting, the Austin Anthony Making Waves award is given to a member of Paddle NL who has demonstrated a commitment to the club in achieving our stated goals. The Award presented during the Paddle NL Annual General Meeting.
Mr. Austin Anthony was a founding father of paddling in Newfoundland and Labrador. He was a master canoeist, master instructor, and active member of Paddle Newfoundland and Labrador until his passing in 2015.
Austin was a firm believer in the Club concept and the benefits that it provided to the individual paddler and the paddling community. He did his utmost to support the many iterations of paddling organizations in this Province.
Austin was a proud member of the predecessor clubs in Newfoundland and Labrador, including the St. John’s Canoe Club, the Newfoundland Canoeing Association, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Paddling Association. At a national level, Austin also served on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Recreational Canoeing Association (the predecessor to Paddle Canada) representing the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
When the Tumblehome Recreational Canoe Club (TRCC) was merged into Paddle Newfoundland and Labrador (Paddle NL), Austin was the longest serving member and had been awarded a lifetime membership for his many contributions to the Club and for his overall contribution to paddling in this Province and Country.
