Ebb & Flow - Fall 2026

President's Message

The summer of 2025 will be remembered as the hottest, dryest summer recorded in the province. While our members reported many fabulous paddling adventures and pleasant days on the water, we are concerned about future climatic events.

Also, we are reminded of the devastation inflicted by the wildfires on the communities and individuals in Conception Bay North, including members of Paddle NL. In response, I am pleased that the Board decided to proceed with a project to raise funds for their support, a 2026 calendar. In the past few years, we have held fundraisers at Halloween and Christmas, in cooperation with The Outfitters; we are happy to continue this tradition of contributing to the community. I encourage everyone to purchase a few calendars this Christmas.

Thank you to the Board members and volunteers who once again organized club paddles, the retreat, the Skills School, clinics, Oceans Day, presentations, social events, and the Ebb & Flow, a staple for the past 25 years. All of these are vital in maintaining the special vibe of Paddle NL. This edition of the Ebb & Flow has a strong Labrador component. In addition, there is an article by the youngest person ever to contribute to the magazine. Thank you, Anna Watton! And as you will see, Hazen and his friends enjoyed kayak camping this summer and fall.

The cost of printing and mailing the Ebb & Flow is significant, about $20 a year per copy for the two editions. In the past a generous Department of Transport Canada grant paid 75% of the cost. The Department of Transport has recognized the Ebb & Flow and the work of Paddle NL as an effective, cost-efficient means of encouraging safe boating. During these challenging times, we are not certain if that grant will continue. Consequently, Paddle NL, in consultation with the editors of the Ebb and Flow, is considering future options such as a digital publication.

As you can appreciate there are pros and cons of digital and paper copies, however we will continue to review options. Would members purchase paper copies? If digital, would the
format change and if so, would it be suitable for printing as well as online viewing? A digital copy would be virtually free and easy to distribute. If you have any thoughts on the future of the magazine, please pass them along. Should we increase the membership fee to pay for the Ebb and Flow?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all and best wishes in 2026.
