Canada Games 2025

You can’t have missed the 2025 Canada Games in St. John’s  last summer! But you might have missed the paddling competitions on Quidi Vidi Lake, especially because Newfoundland did not enter a team in this sport. The competitions were in canoeing and kayaking, in boats holding one, two, or four paddlers. There’s lots of splashing and everyone ends up quite drenched – no staying dry in this sport!

Eight provinces sent teams; Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, the Yukon Territories, and British Columbia.

They raced in 200m, 500m, and 1000m events, in one-person, two-person, or four-person male, female or mixed canoes or kayaks. That could in principle mean 54 different events; in fact, though, there were 38 events, 18 canoe and 18 kayak. It’s a bit hard to tell from the website, without doing a lot of data entry and analysis, but it looks like Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Ontario did particularly well.

This paddling is pretty exciting. You can watch a CBC video of all of the heats and finals at https://www.youtube.com/watch?
