Paddling Placentia Bay and South Coast

        Hampton Hall, Marine Institute

On August 31, 2002, Jim Warren, Richard Chisholm, and Tim Hollett, left Parker’s Cove on the Burin Peninsula enroute to Arnold’s Cove, with no fixed route in mind, for what became a 9-day watery ramble through Placentia Bay by kayak. This trip spawned an annual tradition that would continue for 15+ years and take them along much of Newfoundland’s more remote and wilderness coast.

On July 14, 2024, Tim Hollett left Long Harbour solo for “The Salmon Run” intending to revisit major ruins not seen in 22 years, and paddle, like a salmon, against the prevailing SW winds to the place of his birth (Burin). The “Logistics Quotient” (to use a term coined by T.A. Loeffler) was very low. Paddling “home” seemed like an excellent low impact way to combine a mandatory visit with the parents and an unsupported kayak vacation.

On return to St. John’s, further research reminded Tim of unfinished business, and lead to a second, very different, shorter and more sheltered, 110 km paddle in September. The two trips intersected at the Church of the Assumption in St. Kyran’s.

Join Tim for a review and comparison between the 2002 and 2024 adventures, interspersed with images / stories from some of the other world class wilderness travel options on our most beautiful island home.

A lot has changed in 22 years. But certainly not everything.
